It is located in Spokane Valley, Washington, and it houses the Spokane Valley Heritage Museum. Located within the historic Opportunity Township Hall, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places listings in Spokane County, Washington on March 15, 2005, the museum is a must-see for history buffs.
The museum first opened its doors on August 18, 2005, and in 2013, it was awarded the key to the city of Spokane Valley by the mayor. We are committed to preserving and distributing information on the history of the Spokane Valley and its neighboring areas at all times.
The museum maintains history through the telling of stories that include agricultural legacy, aviation history, military life, and many other topics. They provide visitors with fascinating and informative exhibitions that introduce them to the people, places, and events that helped to shape the Valley and surrounding surroundings into what they are today. The fortitude, courage, and drive of the settlers who came to the Valley in search of the American dream are at the heart of the Valley’s history.
The museum hosts rotating exhibits that teach visitors not just about our local history, but also about state and national history, as well as about space exploration and other topics. Additional to its exhibition space is a large repository of photographs and maps, as well as a range of original source documents, ranging from newspapers to school yearbooks. All of the documents are available for viewing by visitors to the museum.
Annually, the museum receives about 4,000 visitors from each of the 50 states, with some visitors traveling from other countries to view the exhibit. The museum brings in visiting exhibits on a regular basis, which has featured three Smithsonian Traveling Exhibits in the past (2005, 2015, 2018). The museum offers a great selection of educational resources and activities for school children, youth groups, and adult groups, and during the spring months, school-aged children come to the museum with their classmates to learn about their local history and culture, often for the first time.
Using historic monuments on major locations, the museum collaborates with local businesses to preserve the region’s heritage. Businesses and individuals relocating to the neighborhood frequently visit the museum in search of historical and cultural information about their property and/or building, and vice versa. Aside from that, the museum gives tools and information to the City’s leaders in order to assist them in better serving the community by fostering a knowledge of the Valley’s cultural identity, historical significance, and heritage. The museum is staffed mostly by volunteers from the local community who are enthusiastic about history and education.
